The utility resolves the user specification via getpwnam() after entering the chroot but before dropping root privileges. On glibc-based systems, this can trigger the Name Service Switch (NSS) to load shared libraries (e.g., libnss_*.so.2) from the new root directory. If the NEWROOT is writable by an attacker, they can inject a malicious NSS module to execute arbitrary code as root, facilitating a full container escape or privilege escalation.","state":0,"publishedAt":"2026-04-22T18:31:45+00:00","modifiedAt":"2026-09-10T03:51:02.4319882+00:00","affected":[{"ecosystem":"crates.io","name":"coreutils","ranges":[{"type":"SEMVER","events":[{"kind":"introduced","version":"0"},{"kind":"last_affected","version":"0.8.0"}]}],"versions":[],"rawVersionEvidence":null}],"metrics":[{"system":"CVSS_V3","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H","score":null,"severity":null},{"system":"Publisher rating","vector":null,"score":null,"severity":"HIGH"}],"references":["https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-35368","https://github.com/uutils/coreutils/issues/10327","https://github.com/uutils/coreutils"],"sourceUrl":"https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-mh5c-xrmh-m794","license":"GitHub Advisory Database · CC-BY-4.0","key":"osv:GHSA-mh5c-xrmh-m794","identifiers":["GHSA-mh5c-xrmh-m794","CVE-2026-35368"]},"retained":false,"historicalAffected":[]}],"coverage":[]}
