What and why

We're introducing Record in the Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app. This feature enables users to capture in-person conversations or record voice notes and receive an AI-generated transcript and summary in Copilot Chat after recording ends.

Record helps users capture important information wherever work happens and quickly transform spoken content into actionable summaries. Built on Microsoft 365's enterprise-grade security, compliance, and manageability capabilities, recordings and generated content remain governed by the same controls that protect users' Microsoft 365 data.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 498640.

Rollout schedule

  • Frontier preview: Available to Frontier customers beginning in late July 2026
  • General Availability (Worldwide): Beginning in late August 2026 and is expected to be complete by late September 2026

Impact on your organization

Who is affected

  • Users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license
  • Users of the Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app on iOS or Android
  • Admins managing Microsoft 365 productivity apps

Platforms and services

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app
  • Copilot Chat
  • OneDrive for Business
  • Microsoft Purview compliance solutions
  • Microsoft Intune

What will happen

  • Users will see a new Record option in the Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app.
  • Record is available from the plus (+) menu in the Copilot Chat prompt box alongside attachment options such as photos and files.
  • The feature is enabled by default for users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
  • Users can record in-person conversations or voice notes and receive an AI-generated transcript and summary in Copilot Chat after recording ends.
  • Audio recordings are uploaded to the user's OneDrive for Business after recording is stopped.
  • Individual recordings can be up to 120 minutes in length.
  • Recording can continue while the app runs in the background and the user switches between applications.
  • The recording, transcript, and summary inherit existing OneDrive for Business permissions and governance settings.
  • Existing retention policies, sensitivity labels, Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies, and eDiscovery controls continue to apply to recorded content.
  • Microsoft does not use customer recordings, transcripts, or summaries to train Microsoft's foundation AI models, large language models, or speech recognition models.

Action required and recommendations

No action is required to enable this feature.

We recommend that admins:

  • Review whether Record aligns with your organization's recording and consent requirements.
  • Communicate the upcoming feature to users, especially those who may record in-person meetings or conversations.
  • Remind users that they are responsible for obtaining any required consent before recording conversations. Recording laws and organizational policies vary by location, and Microsoft 365 Copilot does not notify other participants when a user starts recording.
  • Review mobile app governance requirements and determine whether the feature should remain enabled for your organization.
  • If you want to disable Record, deploy an App Configuration Policy in Microsoft Intune and set com.microsoft.office.officemobile.Dictation.IsAllowed = false.
  • Record content is automatically in scope for your existing Microsoft Purview eDiscovery, sensitivity labels, DLP, and retention policies. No additional configuration is required.
  • Update internal user guidance and help desk documentation as appropriate.
